A Story of Grace

Lately I’ve been writing fiction.  I’m having a great time with it.  It’s liberating, after spending so much time writing Memoir, to delve into a realm of complete creativity — to move from harvesting the patterns from my own experience into using those patterns as a foundation to weave something totally new – a telling of a story that is unprecedented.  And yet, even in its newness, it feels old; it feels connected to archetypes and patterns that are inherent in every aspect of this universe that we are playing in.

This new experiment of writing fiction has me pondering the notion that maybe there is, really, only one story, a story that all of creation is telling, and that every unique story – whether fact or fiction, is simply a thread in the web of this one, ultimate story.  Inside of this notion, the One Story, then, is the Ultimate Reality…is God/Spirit/The Divine/The Soul of the Universe…or whatever language works for you.

Let’s sink deeper into this concept of The Ultimate Reality perceived as Story:

This Great Story; The One Story; The Only Story of Reality, is too big for any of us to feel.  We experience its echoes, constantly; its microcosms form our days, inform our choices…but it is not a one way street — our microcosms reweave its macrocosms, our choices shape its echoes…all dancing together as The Great Story of the Evolution of Consciousness, that we are all authoring together even as it authors us.

And the patterns of the story guide us into self-organization, just like ants in an anthill are guided by the patterns of their pheromones, with one significant difference: we choose, in every moment. And our choices shape the Story.  The Story is the higher force, and we are not separate from that higher force.

We are not separate from it, but we can observe it and experience it.  That is the miracle of our human consciousness.  It’s so glorious.  It’s so advanced.  Oh, of course our observation of it is partial, because observation of anything is always partial.  But even our partial understanding is breathtaking: I-the-Source has given birth to we-the-infinite, and that we has the capacity to understand that we are each uniquely Source.

And from there it only gets more exciting.  Because the more we know Source, the more we love Source, the more we choose to participate in love with Source…to literally, make love with Source.  And the more we make love with Source, the more we are impregnated by source, and the more new creations we birth.  That’s why Eros is Creativity is Life-Force energy.  Every new creation is the result of the WE (or a unique piece of WE, or a unique section of the Web of the WE) making love with the I, The One, The All.

And someday, we may birth a consciousness with the capacity to (partially) observe us, just as we have the capacity to (partially) observe Source which birthed us.  Perhaps we are pregnant with this newness already.

I’ve been calling the new thing that gets birthed, Grace.  And She is the Story, and she is us, and she is Source…created from the lovemaking of Source-the-I-the-One-the-All and Source-the-We-the-Many-the-Infinite, giving birth to Source’s Grace, in whatever form she takes. We cannot predict her form, any more than any artist can predict the fullness of a painting, or any parent the fullness of a child, until it is realized.  We can only guess at hints of her, while she grows; while we grow her, through ever more Love-Making with Source.  What we can know is this: the Story-that-is-Born (Grace) is and will be a unique and complete expression of the Story-that-formed-US (Source).

Creation, then, is our glory.  It is our infinity of evolution.  It is everything.  And every new creation tells a story, and it tells the same story, the one story: the story of creation.

The work; the play; the experiment; the practice, then, is simply to weave the next layer.  And in the practice of weaving, every moment is the moment of conception, and every moment is the moment of birth.  Because this is all already true; all already happening.  There’s no “getting there”  there’s just doing more of it.  More newness. More layers to the story.  More experiences of Grace.

Which brings us back to: everything is already perfect. And we continue on, forever, participating in the perfection of the Great Story, co-creating brand new perfection: unprecedented tellings of the Story, to infinity.

In the moment of understanding this, the ideas of right and wrong really do dissolve.  It all becomes play –  “Serious Play,” as the Tantrics say.  Unique Perfection, making love with The Original Perfection it proceeded from, and giving birth to Unprecedented Perfection, infinitely.

From this perspective,  Duality has such purpose.  We learned, when we divided Ourself to meet Ourselves, the value, the richness, of the interplay of consciousness with unconsciousness.  How the unconscious is the fertile soil from which Grace grows.  Looking at it like this, the purpose behind Duality is not to banish unconsciousness, not to cut it off, and certainly not to grow out of it,  but to wrap it in a container so that it can dance with consciousness and thereby fuel the creation of Grace.  And the container is made of Grace.  And the weaving of it is Grace.

The story we are living in, the story we are living as, the story we are living for: a story of Grace.
